Day 20 Today Is Penguin Awareness Day

African Penguin Today is Penguin awareness day and as such here is our African Penguin, Brilpikkewyn in Afrikaans. They make a loud donkey-like braying sound and are presently on the endangered list due to a variety of reasons, pollution, disturbances at their breeding grounds and competing with fisheries for their food. We saw them at Simonstown at the Boulders. They are strange yet endearing characters we must look after them.

Day 11 Secretary Bird In The Wild, What A Surprise!

secret bird On a trip up the West Coast, we were amazed to sight a Secretary Bird alongside the Road. We screeched to a halt, reversed and there it was, busy trying to catch something in the grass. It was so thrilling to see as this is the very first time we have ever seen one in the wild, we watched it until it flew off way back onto the farmlands. So happy to know they are still surviving here in the Cape. We sighted this bird just a few kilometres before Velddriff on the West Coast of the Cape.

Day 8 Seagull Eating A Frog

SGullfrog Watching birds from a hide at Intaka Island I was amazed to observe this Hartlaub's Seagull eating a frog. Then again, on second thoughts, these scavengers have been seen eating chips at Hout Bay and even chicken bones outside KFC so I suppose frogs are not off the menu then.

Garden Acrea Butterfly

Acrea BFly Beautiful and graceful, varied and enchanting, small but approachable, butterflies lead you to the sunny side of life. And everyone deserves a little sunshine. ~Jeffrey Glassberg

Don’t you think this is the cutest, perfect couple?

I love these little Cape Sparrows that are normally called "common". I question how anyone could call these, cute and beautiful birds, "common".

Cormorant Playing Pick Up Sticks

Saw this White-breasted Cormorant diving with this stick then throwing it in the air catching it and diving with it again for about ten minutes. I really love the intense colour of his eye.
